Cumberland County Freeholder Louis Magazzu Resigns After Nude Pictures Surface Online

BRIDGETON, N.J. (CBS) – The career of a South Jersey politician has been derailed after nude photos of him were posted online.

Cumberland County freeholder Louis Magazzu has resigned after his nude photos wound up on a political opponent’s web site.

Magazzu, 53, admits he sent the photos to a woman with whom he’d had an online relationship. But the pictures found their way onto a Republican opponent’s web site, magazzuwatch.com.

Magazzu said he was not aware that woman was “working with an avowed political enemy to distribute these pictures.”

In his resignation statement (below), Magazzu, who has been a county freeholder since 1997, apologizes for failing to demonstrate the wisdom and balance the people of Cumberland County deserved.

“Nothing he did touched upon his office,” says Magazzu’s attorney, Rocco Cipparone. “He didn’t use any county services or equipment in this conduct. But he is looking at the options, in particular the embarrassment caused to the citizens of Cumberland County and his family, which was unintended by him. ”

Magazzu was in the process of getting divorced when the photos surfaced.

Cipparone says one option is legal action against web site operator Carl Johnson, for invading Magazzu’s privacy.

RESIGNATION STATEMENT OF LOUIS N. MAGAZZU
August 2, 2011

The greatest professional privilege of my life has been to serve as a Cumberland County Freeholder since my election in 1997.

Since my election, I have worked to improve the quality of life for all families of Cumberland County. I am proud of the accomplishments that have come from the collective work of the Freeholders with whom I have been honored to serve. I am particularly proud of the work which resulted in the Federal Empowerment Zone which brought twenty five million dollars into our county and two hundred and fifty million dollars in private investment, the fifty million dollar Motorsport Park and the NACo prescription card which has resulted in savings to our residents into well over a million dollars. I am proud of the forty four million dollar expansion of the Cumberland County College; half of which was paid by the State of New Jersey. I am proud of the years working together where we fought for the people of Cumberland County.

Unfortunately, in my personal life, I did not always demonstrate the wisdom and balance that I expected from myself, and that the people of Cumberland County deserve and have every right to expect.

As a consequence, a woman who I have never met personally, but have corresponded with on the internet for several years, has recently shared some photographs which she requested and that were intended only for her eyes. I did not know that she was working with an avowed political enemy to distribute these pictures. I have retained counsel to determine what laws may have been broken by the unauthorized distribution of those pictures. No government services or equipment were used by me when taking the pictures or transmitting them to the woman in question.

I apologize to Carmele who has been supportive of me throughout our lives and particularly since our separation of nearly two years and during this very difficult time. I apologize to my children, the rest of my family, to those who have supported me.

I apologize to my colleagues in elected office, the wonderful professionals I have dealt with in the county and in other governmental endeavors and to the people of Cumberland County. The leaders of the county have enormous challenges and cannot have this type of distraction.

To spare those I love further pain, and to hopefully begin the process of healing, I hereby resign, as Freeholder and from all other affiliated positions, effective immediately, so that I may privately, through counseling and the grace of God confront my personal responsibilities.

I would only request that our community show compassion for those whose pain I have caused so that we may begin to heal.

What this guy did in his personal time is his issue. Obviously as a publlc figure he should know better, but it had NOTHING to do with how he held his political position. What should really be focused on is Carl Johnson, who obviously has no other way to beat this guy politically than to attack his private life. The woman Mr.Magazzu sent the photos to gave her consent to him, meaning he sent them after she asked him to or agreed to him sending them. If this is the only way Carl Johnson can make a name for himself and gain some attention, is he really someone you would want running your county? He should probably find a hobby to take up that free time instead of destroying other people’s lives/.

    1. Chris says:

You are right, his sending naked pictures of himself is totally the other guys fault. That is ridiculous. As he was taking pictures of himself and then sending them to someone he has never met is all him. If Carl had taken the naked pictures without Louis knowing and then posting them, then it would be Carl’s fault.

      1. Shelley says:

Hahaha. You completely misunderstood the context of that post.

  2. Zzbar says:

List one politician, man/lady who is not a perv. It seems now-a-days its goes along with the job.

  3. Mary says:

He has just embarrassed his five kids beyond belief. Obviously he wasn’t thinking about them. Disgrace

  4. Mary says:

He has five kids. Obviously he wasn’t thinking about them. He is a dogface

  5. waalter says:

Lou should go in business showing his nude self off.market research is needed to find people attracted to this.If there is money in it and future in it.

  6. harry says:

What a frivolous distraction ,we have many serious issues to contend with.

  7. josephine says:

A lowlife act in the poorest county in the state.does that surprise you?Lou should have kept it in his pants and his sexual fantaxies in the motel rooms.

  8. Chris says:

I think what frank is saying is that if this was a republican it would be part of the headline. When it’s a democrat it is usually buried in the text. In this article the only way to know is that the pics were found on the republican’s website.

When will politicians learn? You will get caught, don’t send naked pics of yourself to anyone for any reason.

    1. patcee says:

Democrats are never buried – they are displayed to the public just like the Republicans are and everyone can satisfy their prurient interest in the personal lives of others. Elliot Spitzer and John Edwards, for instance. The reason this guy is not big news is because of his office. He is hardly worthy of a national front page story.

      1. Chris says:

You are missing the point. If he was a republican, this would have been stated in the headline but since he is a democrat, his party is not reported.

  9. Frank needs a brain says:

All perverts must be democrats because….Republicans are all squeaky clean, upstanding citizens who never ever ever engage in perversion?

    Thought so…

    1. Frank says:

      Sorry, you missed the point.

Perv affiliation is not identified, yet “republican opponent” is in the article.

I pity your inability to grasp simple concepts.

  10. Carolyn says:

    What a PIG of a TOTAL IDIOT…

  11. Frank says:

Given the lack of party affiliation listed, I’ll assume this perv is a democrat.

    Thought so…
