Local Restaurants See Spike In Business With People Trying To Beat The Heat

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The recent heat wave may be making you miserable, but it can translate into big bucks for area restaurants. Some are seeing a spike in customers who don't want to cook.

As the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen and apparently during a heat wave that's what many people do. Some area restaurants say they are seeing larger crowds for dinner because people don't want to fire up the oven in their home when the temperature is in the nineties.

At Phil's Tavern and Restaurant in Blue Bell, owner Charles Compagnucci says business has been up during the week and people are staying longer. "Usually they'll eat and they'll leave, but with the heat they come in and they stay a little longer and they're not in a rush to get out. So it's been good for us."

He says there are several fans going in the restaurant's kitchen and the cooks drink plenty of fluids to stay cool. He also says people eat lighter; opting for salads and chicken instead of pasta and meats.
