Philadelphia Police Arrest Suspect In Violent Society Hill Robberies

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- An ex-con sought by Philadelphia Police for attacks on women in the Society Hill area surrendered to authorities Wednesday afternoon.

Police say 39-year-old Willie Wyche turned himself in shortly after 3 p.m. at police headquarters.

He is charged for the incident that occurred on July 10, 2011 in the 700 block of Lombard Street and is suspected of committing at least five others. (see related story)

Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bechtel says a full-court press by investigators helped bring the case to a rapid conclusion...

"Beginning with the grabbing of video from a private residence, to these fine officers behind me from the 6th District who were out there after we had a number of these incidents, on the ground putting themselves in the positions as decoys to try to track this."

The violent attacks on women in the Society Hill-Washington Square West area began June 25th and continued through July 16.

Wyche was just released from prison in May after serving 20 years for assault and robbery.

Police confirm some of his victims have managed to identify him from a photo lineup.
