BLOG: Philly HazMat Drop Off Event Thursday

By Jim Donovan: The City of Philadelphia is holding a free citywide Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event tomorrow, Thursday, July 21 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at State Road and Ashburner Street. The event is sponsored by the Streets Department's Sanitation Division and allows residents to recycle or dispose of unwanted Household Hazardous Waste accumulated in their home or garage.

You can bring old and unused cans of oil-based paint (latex or water base paint is not hazardous), solvents, pesticides, flammable liquids such as old gasoline and kerosene, used oil, antifreeze and brake fluid. These items contain elements that are potentially hazardous when disposed of in the trash.

Over 3,700 Philadelphia residents dropped off over 264,000 lbs. of potentially hazardous material during the City's 2010 Household Hazardous Waste program. Trained staff will be on hand to sort and properly package materials dropped off for disposal.

No waste materials generated by a business will be accepted. This event will be held rain or shine.

For additional information and a list of materials eligible for drop off, contact the Streets Department's Customer Affairs Unit at
(215) 686-5560.

For more information regarding drop off events in the participating counties, visit the Streets Department's web site at www.philadelphiastreets.com.
