1 Dead, Suspect Hospitalized After Standoff In Ewing, NJ

EWING, NJ (CBS) - A New Jersey man has been hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a lengthy standoff in a Mercer County apartment complex. Authorities say the suspect, who was armed with a high powered rifle, shot and killed his neighbor in a nearby parking lot.

At 12:30 p.m., Ewing Police received a 911 call about shots being fired in a parking lot on Lower Ferry Road & Sullivan Way.

Police arrived to find a 51-year-old man had been shot and quickly learned the suspect had barricaded himself in the area, armed with a gun.

All residents in the approximately 100-unit Versailles apartment complex were evacuated and police made no attempt to reach the victim, for fears the gunman would open fire.

After a seven hour standoff, officers made entry into the building at around 8 p.m. and found the suspect with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital alive. His condition at this time is unknown.

Authorities say the victim and suspect lived in the apartment complex, but are unsure of the relationship between the two.

NJ State Police have not released anymore information on the victim or suspect at this time.

Residents of the apartment complex will be allowed back to their homes shortly.
