EWING, NJ (CBS) – A New Jersey man has been hospitalized with a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a lengthy standoff in a Mercer County apartment complex. Authorities say the suspect, who was armed with a high powered rifle, shot and killed his neighbor in a nearby parking lot.
At 12:30 p.m., Ewing Police received a 911 call about shots being fired in a parking lot on Lower Ferry Road & Sullivan Way.
Police arrived to find a 51-year-old man had been shot and quickly learned the suspect had barricaded himself in the area, armed with a gun.
All residents in the approximately 100-unit Versailles apartment complex were evacuated and police made no attempt to reach the victim, for fears the gunman would open fire.
After a seven hour standoff, officers made entry into the building at around 8 p.m. and found the suspect with a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital alive. His condition at this time is unknown.
Authorities say the victim and suspect lived in the apartment complex, but are unsure of the relationship between the two.
