3-Year-Old Dies After Fall In West Philly Apartment, Investigators Rule Homicide

PHILADELPHIA, Pa (CBS)- Jackwin Bruton, the three-year-old who was rushed to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia after falling down the stairs in a West Philadelphia apartment, has died, and investigators have ruled that his death was a homicide.

Ashley Bruton, Jackwin's mother, told Eyewitness News that it was a toughest decision to take her son off of life support.

Jackwin was rushed to the hospital after being found barely alive in a West Philadelphia apartment where he fell, attaining critical injuries. Police say that Jackwin was being cared for by his godmother.

The godmother said in an interview conducted by Eyewitness News that the injuries occurred accidently after the little boy fell down a flight of stairs. The godmother insisted that the child was not abused or molested.

But Jackwin's mother, who sat by her son's bedside for 11 days, insists that the injuries weren't an accident.

"He had burn marks coming from his feet, up to his chest," his mother said. "His back, his butt, his feet."

Police are continuing to analyze evidence from the apartment and have not filed any criminal charges against Jackwin's godmother or anybody else who could be associated with the little boy.

As Jackwin's family prepares for the three-year-old's funeral, they are convinced that what happened to the boy was a crime.

An investigation into the circumstances of his death is now underway.

No charges have been filed.
