College Affordability

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The US Department of Education has unveiled a website that lists college affordability as a means of making college costs more accessible, transparent and accountable to the public.

Highest and lowest tuition for private and nonprofit four and two year colleges are listed as part of the mandate of the College of Higher Education Opportunity Act (2008), adding data to bolster President Obama's push for a better educated populace.

Bates College in Maine ranks first in tuition among private colleges with a cost of $51,000. Wells College in New York ranks first in the nation for a one-year tuition increase. Penn State is the most expensive public university at $14, 416. Residence and other fees make that much higher, however.

With the economic downturn, community colleges are enrolling large numbers of applicants who expect to transfer to four-year schools. There's still time to apply for fall by August 1st.
