Don't Be Foolish With Fireworks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you haven't seen it by now, you will probably be shown a video of a watermelon being blown up by a firework.

Television news loves certain images and this one is as predictable as anything you will see all year, but I am not criticizing --I am actually applauding. We all need to see this image because it drives home the point that fireworks in the wrong hands can cause severe injuries. Each year people lose fingers or suffer other deforming injuries because of this.

The problem is worsening each year because it is much easier to purchase fireworks at roadside stands. Make sure you talk to your children about the risks and do not let them use fireworks unless there is an adult around who can supervise the use of fireworks.

Make no mistake, fireworks in the right hands can be fun and a true source of celebration but you want to avoid needless injury.
