Phillies Place Closer Ryan Madson On Disabled List

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Phillies today announced that closer Ryan Madson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right hand contusion.

To take his place on the roster, righthander Andrew Carpenter has been recalled from AAA Lehigh Valley.

Madson's DL stint is retroactive to June 19th.   He joins Roy Oswalt on the DL, who was placed there last Friday (see related story).

He has converted 15 of his 16 save opportunities while striking out 34 batters over 31.0 innings.  In 31 games he has gone 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA.

Carpenter has been dominate at Lehigh Valley this season, going 5-0 with a 1.58 ERA in 24 games.

Carpenter, 26, has been up on the big league roster several times over the last few years, going 1-1 in 5 games with a 9.31 ERA.

The Phillies host the Boston Red Sox in the opener of an interleague series tonight at Citizens Bank Park.
