PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Despite generally unenthusiastic reviews, Green Lantern attracted lots of green this weekend.

The comic book-inspired fantasy thriller starring Ryan Reynolds (pictured) earned an estimated $53 million on its debut weekend to finish a runaway first at the box office.

Last weekend’s leader, Super 8, the coming-of-age creature feature, dropped to second, taking in a respectable $21 million on its second weekend.

In third place was the weekend’s other new mainstream release, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, the children’s comedy starring Jim Carrey.  It had an $18-million opening weekend.

Rounding out the top five were the holdover sequels, X-Men: First Class and The Hangover Part II, with $11 million and $10 million respectively.

Overall, industry returns were pretty much as expected on this early summer weekend, but well below those of the counterpart weekend last year.
