There can’t be anything much cooler than setting your nether regions in the donut hole of a gussied-up innertube and floating down the Schuylkill or Delaware River, using nature for a watery air conditioner.

Two of the tube, raft, and kayak rental operations I like for the scenic and cooling effect are Schuylkill River Outdoors, near Birdsboro, Pa., and Bucks County River Country, on the Delaware.

Or, if you prefer to chill on dry land with a roaring waterfall or a series of them helping temperatures plummet, head for Bushkill Falls (below), on Route 209 in the Poconos.  Wooded hiking trails hidden from the broiling sun along with eight cascading waterfalls provide an unfailing cooler in a pristine environment.

Then again, you might prefer to go underground, where the sun never penetrates. Make a beeline for Crystal Cave, near Kutztown, Pa.  It may be pushing a hundred outside, but it’s in the comfy 50s down under.

Schuylkill River Outdoors is a fantastic time. Quiet, peaceful, and a wonderful getaway. A couple hours on the river melted away my workweek stress. And the best part, i was able to take my family of 4 for a trip for under $100. We’ll be back soon. Thanks Schuylkill River Outdoors!!!!

Yes, the venerable Crystal Cave is still pretty cool. Some 50 years-on I was able to recognize features I’d seen as a child in the early ’60s.
