Community Education Center, In West Philly, Asks For Votes Toward $50,000 Renovation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A West Philadelphia center for art and dance is one of ten institutions from around the country eligible for a $50,000 grant, but the public has to help make it happen.

Since 1973, the Community Education Center, at 35th Street and Lancaster Avenue, has supported professional artists, mainly dancers, by introducing them into the community with residence programs, performances, and workshops.

Now, the CEC is the only Pennsylvania institution eligible for a $50,00 grant from Maxwell House's "Drops of Good" Community Project.

"Most anybody working in dance in Philly and who has been working in dance has come through the CEC," notes CEC executive director Theresa Shockley, who adds that the money, if awarded, would go toward a much-needed renovation.

Only the top five contestants will get the grants and makeovers.   You have until midnight Friday to vote, at maxwellhouse.com.
