PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – This is the time of year animal shelters often see more kittens than they can handle. To help reduce the number of future homeless animals, the Pennsylvania SPCA is offering reduced-cost procedures this month.

On Sundays and Mondays in June, the fix is in for cats.

“Every Monday for $25, owners can have their female cats spayed and also receive rabies and distemper vaccinations. Every Sunday in June for only $20, owners can have male cats neutered and also receive the vaccinations.”

Wendy Marano with the Pennsylvania SPCA says that’s a big savings from what private vets often charge.

“While we’re trying to find homes for all these kittens and cats that are in the shelters, we’re also trying to promote responsible pet ownership by encouraging people to get their cat spayed or neutered.”

There’s also microchipping available for $5 – that could help ID your cat if it wanders off.

The services are by appointment at the SPCA’s Erie Avenue location in Hunting Park. Call 215-426-6300.
