Support For Cancer Patients

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Cancer can be a devastating disease but the more we learn about it the more we recognize the role of support.

There have been numerous studies on the subject but let’s face it — being positive and having support can’t hurt the outcome. I can tell you first-hand that in basically all cases, there’s nothing that makes patients feel better than realizing they’re not alone through an illness, especially a life-threatening illness. It’s important to know that there are other people who are survivors.

We often learn from those around us and there is no doubt that many valuable lessons can be learned from those in similar situations. Whether you have cancer or another serious medical condition, I recommend a support group.

    You are right Dr McDonough

The best support comes from those who have ‘been there’.

After I’d cheated death from cancer friends who knew I was already a published author were asking if I would write about that too. Just after I’d written my first vignette that began the subsequent book ‘Cancer – a Journey’ I heard of a friend who had also come down with cancer.

Here’s what I wrote for her – and thank goodness, she loved it and told me it was ‘just the right thing at the right time’.

    It’s called :

    You are not alone
    The poverty of illness
    the aloneness
    You share with others
    alone with pain

    The night flows through
    Happy people smiling
    You are not alone Beryl
    You are not alone

    All about you
    are others
    Who are like you
    But not alone
    with this shared experience

    I am with you all
    when I hear of
    your pain
    your long day
    Like my pain
    like my long day
    Not alone
    10th September 2001 – late night
