Northeast Philadelphia 'Alternative' School Guides Its Girls Through Summer And Beyond

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -An "alternative" Philadelphia school for students who have had previous disciplinary issues held an "Empowerment Day" today for girls, designed to give them tips on how to succeed this summer and beyond.

A series of guest speakers was sharing their keys to success.   Shallcross Academy's "Girlz to Women Empowerment Day" was designed by director of admissions Rahima Sabir.

"A lot of our young ladies don't have mothers in their lives," Sabir says, "so they really need to know what it is to be a woman.  So we're going to talk about self-esteem, conflict resolution, self-control, anger management, safe sex."

And she says the timing of the program is intentional:

"During the summer they run into a lot of problems -- there's nothing to do."

Senior Basimah Baker (below right), now headed to Community College, says this program is an example of people really caring.

"We're hard to read," Basimah admits. "We're given a second chance at school because we did wrong, but this school, Shallcross Academy, they believe in us.  So it's like a new life."
