Health Watch: New Fat Burner

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The newest way to melt fat, just in time for summer. And there's no surgery and no recovery time. 3-On Your Side Health Reporter Stephanie Stahl shows you what it is.

Like many moms, girlfriends Mary Gerlich and Jan Corcione had trouble getting rid of belly fat.

"I have two sons and one was nine pounds, six ounces when he was born. The other was eight pounds, three ounces," said Mary.

"You notice it first in your pants, a little muffin top. That's what you want to get rid of," said Jan.

Neither wanted liposuction, so when Mary heard about a new device that melts away fat, without surgery, she immediately called her friend.

The device is called Exilis. The manufacturer says it uses radio frequency and ultrasound waves to break up fat cells, and tighten the skin. There's no anesthesia and no recovery, just a little redness on the skin, and a hot feeling.

"Like a heating pad on you, a hot, like on high," said Jan.

The FDA approved the device to eliminate wrinkles, but doctors are able to also use it for other applications, off label, to eliminate fat.

Mary had five treatments and sees a big improvement.

"It tightened my stomach as well as I lost an inch and three quarters, so I'm very happy with the results," said Mary.

Dr. Patricia Wexler says the results aren't as dramatic as liposuction, but it's cheaper and less invasive.

"This is the first exterior melting technique that I've been really happy with," said Dr. Wexler.

Jan lost an inch and a half around her waist, with one more treatment to go.

The average person needs four to six, 30 minute treatments that cost about $460 each. Exilis isn't just for the stomach area. Dr. Wexler says it can be used almost anywhere on the body where there's unwanted fat.
