PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Some schools have already let out and within a few weeks summer vacation will be here for everyone in listening distance and well beyond that. I think it is safe to say that for most of us the thought of not having school for the summer still conjures up great memories.

Kids need relaxation just like adults and this is a great opportunity for them but I have a major suggestion. Keep them active and if they are not usually active try to encourage games that require exercise. We are seeing a huge problem with obesity and diabetes in our children and there is no doubt that exercise — especially fun forms of exercise — can help in that battle.

The other advantage is that socialization is great for kids. The same skills they will need as adults can be honed on the playground and at sporting events
