CAMDEN, NJ (CBS) – Murder charges have been filed against a Camden County woman in the death of an infant left in her care last year.
Lori Laquitara, 45, of Voorhees was babysitting 11-month-old Stephen Torrey of Williamstown in her home last July. She summoned police, who took the child to a hospital where he died a day later, the result of a three and a half inch fracture to the back of his head.
Camden County Prosecutor’s Office spokesman Jason Laughlin says Laquitara suggested the infant hit his head on a computer cord, then fell on a carpeted floor. Then she suggested it was wooden steps.
“We talked to her on a number of occasions. None of the versions that she offered to us to explain the injury made any sense,” Laughlin says.
Laughlin says the medical examiner had his own opinion about what happened, “He said that what she said happened could not have caused the kind of injury he saw with this infant.
She’s being held on $600-thousand bail and, should she make bail, she’s under court order to have no contact with children without supervision.
