New Jersey Senate GOP Considers Next Moves On Education

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Senate Republicans are being asked to unite behind an education strategy that includes giving the Legislature power to determine school funding amounts even in poor districts.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Kean Jr. suggested course of action for 16 Senate Republicans in an email obtained by The Associated Press.

The memo asks Republicans for feedback on removing the Supreme Court from future school funding decisions by granting the Legislature power to decide what it means to provide a "thorough and efficient" education.

The email was drafted after a Supreme Court order demanding the state invest $500 million more in 31 poor districts.

Adam Bauer, communications director for the Senate Republicans, says the email was meant to spur internal discussion.

Kean didn't return messages for comment.
