New Jersey Trooper Fatally Shoots Armed Man In Cumberland County

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- State investigators say a southern New Jersey man was fatally shot by a state trooper after he pulled out a concealed handgun and pointed it at troopers.

Thirty-three-year-old Willie Gibbons of Seabrook was shot in the abdomen and chest at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after being confronted by three troopers who responded to a domestic complaint in Bridgeton. Gibbons was flown to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he died early Thursday.

Gibbons' former girlfriend had told police he was at her house waving a handgun. He drove off before troopers arrived, but was soon found walking along a nearby road.

No troopers were injured. The trooper who fired the fatal shots wasn't identified.

The shooting will be reviewed by the state Attorney General's Office, which is standard procedure.
