Weekend Box Office: 'Pirates' Blow Out The Competition

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The tides weren't so strange after all.

As expected Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides swashbuckled its way to a runaway first-place finish at the box office, earning an estimated $90 million on its debut weekend.

Slots two through five went to holdover attractions.

Second belonged to the comedy Bridesmaids which took in a healthy $21 million. Last weekend's ticket-selling leader, Thor, dropped to third with $16 million. Fast Five was fourth with $11 million, while Rio placed fifth with $5 million.

Overall, it was a strong industry-wide showing, with another big box office weekend expected with the release of two high-profile sequels, The Hangover Part II and Kung Fu Panda 2.
