Delaware County Police Chase Leads To Deadly Accident In Southwest Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One man is dead and others are injured after a police chase in Delaware County led to a car accident in Southwest Philadelphia Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

Tinicum Township police were pursuing a green Chevrolet Tahoe after the driver allegedly stole the tailgate from a pickup truck parked at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Essington a little before noon.

Police located the vehicle on Route 291 East in Lester and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the vechicle reportedly sped away.

Spike strips were deployed on Bartram and Island avenues in Philadelphia in an attempt to stop the suspect's vehicle. Police say the driver, instead, ran over the strips and sped through a red light at the intersection, striking a Chrysler sedan.

The male driver and female passenger of the Chrysler were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where the driver was pronounced dead, according to police. The extent of the female victim's injuries is unknown at this time.

Authorities say the suspect tried to escape on foot but was prevented from doing so by witnesses. The suspect was arrested and he and his passenger were transported to Hahnemann Hospital for their injuries.

Further investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Tahoe was reported stolen by the Philadelphia Police Department. Charges for the driver are pending.
