PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - One man is dead and others are injured after a police chase in Delaware County led to a car accident in Southwest Philadelphia Sunday afternoon, according to authorities.

Tinicum Township police were pursuing a green Chevrolet Tahoe after the driver allegedly stole the tailgate from a pickup truck parked at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Essington a little before noon.

Police located the vehicle on Route 291 East in Lester and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the vechicle reportedly sped away.

Spike strips were deployed on Bartram and Island avenues in Philadelphia in an attempt to stop the suspect’s vehicle. Police say the driver, instead, ran over the strips and sped through a red light at the intersection, striking a Chrysler sedan.

The male driver and female passenger of the Chrysler were transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where the driver was pronounced dead, according to police. The extent of the female victim’s injuries is unknown at this time.

Authorities say the suspect tried to escape on foot but was prevented from doing so by witnesses. The suspect was arrested and he and his passenger were transported to Hahnemann Hospital for their injuries.

Further investigation revealed that the Chevrolet Tahoe was reported stolen by the Philadelphia Police Department. Charges for the driver are pending.

I called the Univ of Penn at 6:00 AM after seeing this article – as I have a brother who drives the exact same car, often with his girlfriend, and lives in that area – I was horrified. While I am obviously relieved that it was not him, I can’t seem to shake this today – as I am reminded that another family is somewhere absolutely devasted right now. My prayers go out to them. I am so sorry. This was so senseless and not worth it. It reminds me of drunk driving accidents when innocent people are always the ones injured or killed while the person at fault runs away with their life. These cops are fools too……..I am just angry about this right now…….

This is indeed horrible. I know that many states have a “no pursuit” law for this very reason. Its not worth innocent people getting hurt for 1 idiot or a group of idiots fleeing the police. This did not make good sense for the police to put lives in danger for a stolen tailgate!! My condolences and prayers go out to the family of the young who lost his life.

    • Denise

That is exactly what I have been saying, people are injuried, a poor young man is dead and all this over stolen property? So Sad, May his family find peace and may , he RIP.

  • khalilah

I was there and witnessed this horrific accident as well. If the driver of the employee bus didn’t react the way he did, this could’ve been us that was injured or dead. The way the cops tried to stop the suspect on a busy street that was not blocked off so that no one could get hurt was stupid. I blame the police for that young man losing his life because all of what happened could have been prevented if they would’ve use their heads to subdue the suspect. The sad thing is all this was over a stolen vehicle n theft. How do it make sense to put many lives in danger over something that was small as this?? I haven’t been able to sleep or think straight since the accident and my heart goes out to the family of the young man that was killed. I hope n pray someone reads this and get the REAL story out of what happened rather then the police version because though you can’t bring him back, i believe the family of the victim should be compensated because it was the Police department who was at fault for what transpired. My prayer is that the family seek justice and he R.I.P.

    • Denise

I agree 100% with you. It is very sad, I have been very unsettled and I am sure that will not change for a while. I was coming off of 95S and realized that the cops at the Bartham ave exit were NOT Philly cops and was confuesd but dismissed it till I saw it happen. I pray that young man RIP and may his family find thruth in this horroble accident.

  • Anita

All this over a tailgate. That person and his accomplice should spend their lives in jail.

  • Denise

Very sad scene. I witnessed the accident and there was some very heroic bystanders that tackled the driver as he tried to run. May the gentleman that lost his life Rest in Peace, such an unnecessary death. Putting so many lives in danger for stolen property. Property can be replaced , but lives can not. Please investigate if this responds was necessary for a theft.
