Theatre Review: 'The Flea and the Professor,' At The Arden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Arden Theatre Company is presenting a "world premiere musical" loosely based on a vintage Hans Christian Anderson story.

"The Flea and the Professor" is termed "'a play for families," but it certainly is not a musical.

The flea in this revised fable is played by the chubby and popular area actor Scott Greer (center of photo), whose existence in the play originates in The Professor's pocket.

The pair set off on a tour of distant seas, arriving at one point on an island of friendly and reasonably tolerant cannibals.

While much of the behavior here winds down to extended silliness with the possibility of entertaining children, much of the nonsense is clearly for adults.

Our story, such as it is, is packed with brilliantly costumed players and functions with a thin narrative.  And if the truth be known, "The Flea and the Professor" directs us through the doorway of theatrical lunacy.

The show is set to run through June 12th at the Arden Theatre, 40 North Second Street, in Old City Philadelphia.
