Arts Organizations Celebrate Grants From Knight Foundation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Local artists and organizations are celebrating their matching grants from the Philadelphia Knight Foundation Arts Challenge.

Last September, the Knight Foundation asked the question, "What makes art in Philadelphia?" And 1752 organizations, artists, businesses, community organizations and others came up with their own ideas. Two-point-seven million dollars in matching grants are going to the best.

Dennis Scholl, vice president for the arts for the Knight Foundation, says, "For all Philadelphia tenth graders, there's going to be a free passport to the arts to about a dozen of the city's best cultural facilities."

The Philly Youth Poetry Movement has received $40-thousand for a workshop and performance venue.

"A communal effort to have young people stay off the street and be productive, even after school," says Gregory Corbin, founder and executive director.

The application process for year two begins in the fall.
