Major Changes To The Atlantic City Expressway Underway

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - A major improvement to the Atlantic City Expressway is almost finished - just in time for the busy summer season.

A two-year long project to add a third lane westbound approaching the Egg Harbor tolls is wrapping up. Sam Donelson is deputy executive director of the South Jersey Transportation Authority, which runs the toll road.

"We have our 10-mile widening project on the expressway in the westbound direction. That will be complete before Memorial Day of this year. Also included as part of that job is the express EZ Pass lanes at our Egg Harbor toll plaza. That also will be done by Memorial Day of this year."

Two express toll lanes in each direction, similar to the set up in Pleasantville, will go a long way toward reducing the traditional summer backups at the plaza. Those road crews will set up shop in June west of the Egg Harbor tolls for phase two, adding that third lane for seven more miles. A third seven-mile project is on the drawing board.
