Nutter Leads Tour Of 'Green Block' In Kensington For Earth Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter got an early start on Earth Day yesterday by giving Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson a look at one of the city's major green projects.

The mayor, Jackson and other dignitaries travelled to the Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, part of what's known as the Big Green Block. The mayor says CAPA and the adjacent Shissler Recreation Center have been at the forefront of making good, practical use of the environment.

"At Shissler Recreation Center, there's storm water tree trenches in thE ballpark and surrounding the streets, two rain gardens, street trees, an improved sports field, and new murals. And at Kensington CAPA, porous pavement parking lot, green roofs, rain water cisterns for reuse and an infiltration basin."

The project continues and city officials are hoping it spreads to the surrounding neighborhoods.
