Upper Darby Police Shoot, Kill Unarmed Man After Alleged Robbery Spree

UPPER DARBY, Pa. (CBS) – A robbery spree in Delaware County ended when the suspect was shot and killed by police. An investigation found that the man was unarmed at the time he was shot.

Upper Darby police were on the lookout for a stolen car that had been spotted in at least two other hold-ups Monday night. Around midnight, officers saw that car pull into a Sunoco station on West Chester Pike.

They followed the driver, identified as 23-year-old Aikee Holloman, into the store. Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Holloman saw them, yelled at the clerk for calling the cops and then he crouched down.

"Almost a prone position, trying to hide from them. When they ordered him to put his hands up, he reached in towards his waistband and that's when the officers shot," Chitwood explained.

Chitwood said officers ordered Holloman three times to show his hands. Chitwood says the officers were forced to open fire, and struck Holloman twice.

He was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was later pronounced dead.

Chitwood said they found one gun inside the stolen car Holloman was driving, but no gun was found on his person.

Chitwood described the deadly incident as good police work.

"The officers did an excellent job. And again, when nobody gets hurt, no innocent persons hurt and the bad guy's dead, the officers did a great job."

Investigators said Holloman was released from police custody in Philadelphia on Monday for stealing another car.

The investigation into the deadly incident is ongoing. No one other than the suspect was injured.
