Mayor Nutter Encourages People To Love Parks In Light Of Love Your Park Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter appeared at Hart Park in Kensington South Saturday morning to kick off the citywide Love Your Park Day.

On this third edition of the annual event, most of the volunteers stopped weeding, sweeping, painting and planting to welcome Mayor Nutter, who saluted the combined efforts of the parks department, Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, and the community.

"Thank you very, very much. I love parks. I love parks! And I really love it when it's warmer in parks. There's an awful lot of young people out here -- they could be doing anything else. They could be home, they could be sleeping," Mayor Nutter said.

But even the chilly weather couldn't cool Ivelynda's excitement.

"As soon as I heard about this, I really thought I could make a change."

How does volunteering make her feel?

"It feels real good. It feels like we're making beautiful things in the world, and they'll be more beautiful when the trees and the flowers start blooming."

Just the kind of seeds this event was meant to plant.
