New Pennsylvania Sprinkler Law On Verge Of Repeal

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - A new law that requires sprinklers to be included in new homes built in Pennsylvania is on the verge of being repealed.

The new law only took effect in January, but that's the month that Republicans took control of both chambers of the state legislature. And a bill that would repeal the sprinkler mandate for new homes that has already made it through the House has now been approved by a Senate committee.

Philadelphia senate Democrat Christine Tartaglione says the new law saves lives and disputes opponents' claims that they add too many costs to new homes.

"They're minimal. They really are minimal, if, in fact you're talking about building a new home."

But Senate Republican John Gordner says the costs are not insignificant.

"It adds $3,000 to $6,000 to the cost of a home, and it costs a lot more in a rural area where there's a well system."

Gordner says the bill is expected to get a full vote in the Senate next week and a spokesman says Governor Corbett supports the sprinkler mandate repeal.
