Temple Students Protest Cuts To Higher Education

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - At Temple University today, students held a rally protest Governor Corbett's plan to make drastic cuts in higher education funding.

Filled will fear and anger, about a hundred students gathered in the shadow of the bell tower to urge Governor Corbett to change course.

"Governor Corbett, do not cut my budget," one student said from the podium. "College spending is smart spending and you are being stupid."

"Really it's a question of priorities," another student said. "You're going to spend more money on prisons, less money on schools so that you can spend more kids to prison. Who are we fighting for in Harrisburg?"

Temple stands to lose $90 million under the governor's plan (see related story).

Student body President Natalie Ramos-Castillo said she's been told that if it's approved something has to give, "In talks with President Hart and the Provost here they say that everything's on the table to be cut. They're looking at every program, every department, every side of this university and the last thing they're going to look at is tuition."

A tuition increase is what scares students the most.
