PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Phillies starting rotation is on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, but Phillies fans do not believe that’ll jinx the 2011 season.
Urban legend has it that an appearance on the cover of Sports Illustrated brings bad luck to the athletes so featured. The Phillies starting five are on the April 4th cover — but fans we talked with believe talent will triumph over superstition.
“That just means everybody’s got to come after us. I mean, we have the best pitching staff and pitching is what wins championships.”
Some get the feeling they’re going to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated a few more times this year.
“I think Halladay has a shot to get on the cover a lot of times!”
And fans Jack Lynch and Cory Juliano don’t see any black cats.
“What do you think, Cory, are you superstitious? I’m not,” Lynch said.
“I don’t feel too superstitious about it,” Juliano replied. “I think they’re fine. They’re going to get it done. The five of them are good, and they’ll get it done like they always do, every single year.”
And if they don’t, we can always blame S.I.
