PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Pennsylvania dog rescue group has their sights set on a different kind of second chance. They are trying to buy Michael Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels,” and turn it into a dog sanctuary.
The group Dogs Deserve Better is trying to raise the $595,000 asking price for the Eagles quarterback’s former property. Founder Tami Thayne says the group plans to rename it “Good Newz Kennels.”
“We kind of fell in love with the idea of the whole ‘good versus evil’ scenario, bringing light to darkness.”
Thayne adds that they will keep the kennels Vick used for his dog fighting ring but they won’t use them.
“There are three sheds that were used that still have materials in it and places where they kept dogs and that would all remain as a memorial,” Thayne said.
One problem, the group has only raised $137,000 and it only has until the end of April to raise the remaining $450,000. Thayne says she remains hopeful.
