PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Pennsylvania dog rescue group has their sights set on a different kind of second chance. They are trying to buy Michael Vick’s “Bad Newz Kennels,” and turn it into a dog sanctuary.

The group Dogs Deserve Better is trying to raise the $595,000 asking price for the Eagles quarterback’s former property. Founder Tami Thayne says the group plans to rename it “Good Newz Kennels.”

“We kind of fell in love with the idea of the whole ‘good versus evil’ scenario, bringing light to darkness.”

Thayne adds that they will keep the kennels Vick used for his dog fighting ring but they won’t use them.

“There are three sheds that were used that still have materials in it and places where they kept dogs and that would all remain as a memorial,” Thayne said.

One problem, the group has only raised $137,000 and it only has until the end of April to raise the remaining $450,000. Thayne says she remains hopeful.

Annoyingly he doesn’t own the property, he sold it off when the cops started to look around. I think they should have charged him with obstruction of justice.

THIS OBSESSION WITH MICHAEL VICK REMINDS ME OF THE O J VERDICT—
SOME FOLKS JUST WON’T GET OVER IT!!!!!!!!

    • PJB

I agree!! People need to move on. If it was for the fact that he was known, this would have been forgotten about by now. LET IT GO ALREADY!! Stop wasting your time on this man and focus on saving dogs.

  • Nancy Dorph Etkin

If Michael Vick was truly repentant, he would “sell” the property to this group for $1. But he won’t. He still profits from his illicit activities by selling the property at market value.

    • DieVick

You are absolutely correct. Abusers like Vick don’t change. He’s just playing it up to the media.

This is a GREAT idea! Where do we send the donations? HATE VICK, Love the Good vs Evil theory! This will flourish!

  • Taxpayer550

What Dogs Deserve Better is trying to do is keep the hatred for Michael Vick alive. I don’t like Michael Vick, nor do I like what he did, but he has served his time in prison, is trying to put the past behind him, and is attempting to give back to society. Sometimes I wonder if the same people that still hate Vick would hate him as much if he had murdered a human.

    • DieVick

Are you truly that ignorant? Vick hasn’t changed and he never will. Try to educate yourself a bit on human behavior so you don’t embarrass yourself again.

Exactly how is he “trying to give back to society”? By making millions playing pro football again. Wow. What penance. And cruelty–whether to humans or animals–is cruelty. Vick tortured animals and enjoyed doing it. I’ve heard one of his “speeches” against dog fighting and it was pretty lame. Has he done anything else to help eradicate cruelty to animals. Nope. So exactly how is he trying to “give back to society”?

great suggestions– perhaps they both can give 50-50

the organization Eagles is known for the charity giving
and Vick may actually be considered “reformed”

and at the end the animals will win
the idea of leaving some areas untouched for the memories of the animals which suffered there is very touching.
good luck in the fund raising.

Never happen Kate, Michael Vick couldn’t care less about the dogs he killed, hurt, maimed or if anyone else does it to more.

  • VINCEN SMODIC

LET THE EAGLES PAY FOR IT AS THEY RESCUED HIM AND ARE PROFITING GREATLY FROM THIS ANIMAL ABUSER

  • Chris H.

Maybe they could get Vick to donate the rest. Even after fines etc., he can still afford it and could probably even write it off as a charitable donation.
