South Philadelphia H.S. Students Prepare Meals For Those In Need

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Volunteers from several services groups joined up today with students at South Philadelphia High School today to cook and package meals for the elderly and the infirm.

Southern senior Maria Foster was on the serving line, spooning lasagna, zucchini, and chocolate cake into tin trays and wrapping them up for the Meals On Wheels crowd.

"I just like helping. I volunteer for stuff. It's been fun," she told KYW Newsradio.

Mayor Nutter led the caravan that delivered the food to the homebound.  It was one three events that took place today across the city to celebrate the sixth annual "March for Meals" campaign, which highlights hunger issues that impact the elderly.

"It is so important, especially in this economic downturn, that seniors have their basic nutrition that they deserve.  Millions of seniors are going hungry in this country," notes Angela Foreshaw, with the American Association of Retired Persons.
