National Tap Water Project Launches In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – For a week beginning Sunday, thousands of restaurants nationwide will take part in an effort to share the water they serve customers.

Here, water is cheap and clean from the tap, but that's not true in many places, which is the point of UNICEF's Tap Project.

Caryl Stern, President and CEO of UNICEF US, says over 900 million people are at-risk. "Either the water in their region is not clean and needs to be purified, or they have yet to dig a well, or it's just hours of walking to go to the river and fetch it."

Six areas restaurants are part of the Tap Project, and they'll be asking a little of you. "When they put that glass of water on your table that's usually free, they'll invite you to pay a dollar for it, and one dollar will buy enough water to sustain a child for 40 days."
