'Rubber Room' Teacher, School District To Enter Arbitration

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The case of a Philadelphia school teacher threatened with firing may take a new turn today.

Hope Moffett (in photo above) is still in limbo, assigned each day to an administrative room, often called derisively "the rubber room", rather than her classroom at Audenried High School.

At issue is what she did in speaking or acting out against plans to turn Audenreid into a charter school.

The Union says it's free speech. The District says it's more than that, since it says she gave a student SEPTA tokens to disperse to others, to cut school and go to an anti-charter demonstration.

The district has agreed not to fire her pending results of legal action which was to have been at a hearing next Tuesday. Now the district says there will be an appearance before a Magistrate today to perhaps put the whole thing into arbitration.
