BLOG: March 15th Weather Outlook

By Kate Bilo:

Well, winter is certainly winding down, and as we head through the last week of the season, things are starting to feel decidedly "spring-like"! I'm not sure many people are complaining after another 40+ inches of snow affected the area this winter!

Today is March 15, referred to in the Roman calendar as the "ides" of March. In the Roman calendar, the term "ides" was used to refer to the 15th day of the months March, May, July and October - in other months, the 13th day of the month was called the "ides". So why do we only hear about the ides of March? Probably because of William Shakespeare, who famously penned the line "beware the ides of March" in his play Julius Caesar.

All that for me to say: there's not much to fear on this particular ides of March. It's going to be, overall, a partly sunny and seasonable day, with highs in the low 50's. Clouds will begin to billow in from the South this afternoon, though, as our next storm approaches the area. The good news is that this storm is a fast-mover - it will deliver a shot of rain to the area throughout Wednesday morning, but should depart by midday Wednesday, meaning that rainfall totals will be limited and flooding should not be a concern. Wednesday afternoon may even feature some blue sky and highs in the low 60s.

But that's where the good news starts. We're in for some GORGEOUS weather at the end of the week! St. Patrick's Day is on Thursday, and also it's the official start of the March Madness tournament. (GO PENN STATE!) Ahem. The weather will be downright lovely, with sunshine and highs approaching the middle 60s. Friday looks like the warmest day in a long time, since the first of December, really, with highs climbing into the lower 70s ahead of an advancing front. Now, clouds may increase a bit Friday afternoon and the winds will pick up as well, but still! 72 degrees on the 18th of March is pretty exciting stuff.

We'll cool down a bit over the weekend thanks to that aforementioned front, which could actually spark off some showers overnight Friday night or Saturday morning, but the weekend as a whole looks nice, with highs in the 60s Saturday and upper 50s on Sunday. Remember, spring *officially* begins at 7:21 p.m. EDT on Sunday, March 20th. The light at the end of winter's tunnel is in sight!
