Nutter Worried About Corbett Cuts To Philadelphia 'Eds and Meds'

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - Philadelphia mayor Michael Nutter traveled to Harrisburg today to hear Gov. Tom Corbett's budget address firsthand (see related story).

He spoke with KYW Newsradio by phone later, and voiced concerns about the impact locally of Corbett's cuts to education.

Of greatest concern to Nutter are cuts to the education and medicine industries in Philadelphia -- what he calls the "eds and meds."

"Those are our schools of higher learning, our colleges and universities, hospitals and medical schools," Nutter said.  "Those cuts will have a significant impact.  Those are growth industries for us."

Nutter says his own numbers-crunchers will be poring through the Republican governor's budget to parse the fine print.

"It will take us literally a couple of weeks to sort through the budget document, as to how different allocations will be made.  But the short version of this is: we have many, many concerns," the mayor, a Democrat, said.

And while social service funding seems to have been spared, Nutter is not resting easy.

"We actually won't know for a few weeks as to the real impact on the Department of Human Services and many of our programs in the city.  So we're not in the position to express any comfort at the moment," Nutter told KYW Newsradio.

Reported by Mike Dunn, KYW Newsradio City Hall Bureau chief.
