Man Charged With Molesting Girl After Hotel Mix-Up

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – A Conshohocken man is jailed in Missouri, charged with sodomy and child molestation after police say he got the wrong room key from a clerk at a Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

The 42-year-old was in Missouri, attending a business convention, but police say he ended up in the bed of a nine-year-old girl around four a.m. on Sunday.

According to court documents, Daniel Hughes had been out drinking. When he got back to the Ritz-Carlton in a suburb of St. Louis, where his friend was staying, he told a clerk he didn’t have his room key. The clerk gave him a new one, but he gave the clerk the wrong room number.

Clayton, Missouri Police Chief Tom Byrne said Hughes unlocked the door, and even though it was chained, he forced his way into the room occupied by two girls. “He entered the bed with a 9-year-old and molested her,” said Byrne

Her parents were staying in a connected suite, and when the young girl screamed, Byrne said her father chased Hughes from the room, “He ran out and went downstairs and our officers caught him in the lobby, and he was just dressed in his underwear.”

He’s charged with first degree statutory sodomy and three counts of first degree child molestation.

The hotel clerk has resigned; the Ritz Carlton Hotel released a statement saying they’re cooperating fully with the investigation.

I know Dan and this situation is a horrible tragedy brought on by the worst possible series of events. Dan’s character is beyond dispute among those who know him, and I know beyond any doubt that his regret for this terrible event is beyond imagining.

Years ago, Dan was beaten almost to death by a group of individuals who picked him out randomly as the focus of their anger. I told him how I would have revenged myself, and he explained to me that his attackers were young and angry at the time (though not at Dan specifically) and that he felt that they were now probably sorry for what they had done to him.

I have tried over the years to emulate the moral equivalent of Dan’s example and my heart breaks for him as I’m sure his does for the victim (and her family) of this tragedy.

There will probably be some of you out there who will want to vent anger or condemnation on my friend, but know that what he endures is beyond the scope of anything you can add.

    1. Tom says:

How random do you believe that beating was?

A pervert who is caught doesn’t want things to go to charges filed. Didn’t you think it through as a possibility or probability?

      1. SB says:

Tom, it was related to the riots in southern california in the 90’s. I understand your position and I’d normally agree whole-heartedly. The combination of alcohol and a desk clerk not adhering to due diligence are solely responsible.

The FIRST fault lies with the Hotel Employee who gave him a key without checking his identity. The SECOND fault lies with the intruder who molested the little girl. He needs to be put in GEN-POP at whatever facility he goes to so that he can experience what he did to the little girl. Hey, Daniel, good luck with BUBBA, your new room mate. DON’T DROP THE SOAP you pervert.

  3. Alejandro says:

This is dumb! every parent that can afford a connecting room for some privaciy will do it… The front desk staff that gave him the wrong key without checking ID is the one at fault…I feel more comfortable now that he resigned. However I do agree that this guy should be castrated and send to jail so he can have the oportunity to have a stranger come into your room while you sleep and get sodomized… the only diference is that in jail…no one can hear you scream!!!!

  4. Jack says:

Doesn’t anyone care that the Ritz-Carlton just gave out a room key to a drunken idiot at 4 AM and didn’t verify his identity? Where is their security and a little bit of common sense? I’ll never stay at any of their hotels again!

  5. LeighAnn says:

I understand how people feel about the parents having the kids in an adjoining room but point the finger where it really belongs. The person in the wrong here is obviously the perv who entered the room. The focus should be on him! I hope he goes to prison where he’ll be sodomized every day of his life!

  6. A PARENT says:

OMG!!!!!! what kind of parents get a connected room for a NINE YEAR OLD?????? that’s just plain stupidity on their part!!

i don’t care how drunk he was or wasn’t, i hope they send him to jail for life! NO EXCUSE!! PIG!!

    1. responding to a dumb dumb says:

I’ve done it before. My son’s 8 my daughter 9. What’s the problem? They have a connecting door that opens into 2 rooms. What’s the problem? Your post is plain stupidity.

    2. Dude says:

Uh, so you sleep in bed with your children?

      That’s sick!

the parents were in an adjoining room. There were two other kids in that room, two teen aged girls, the door was locked and the chain was on.

  7. dan says:

i dont understand was he just passed out or did he do something to the girl we need more info

    1. anon says:

Did you actually read the article? It says what he did.

  8. maddie says:

Why the heck would the parents leave a young girl alone in a room by herself. The girl should have stayed in with her mother, the father should have stayed in the other room.

    1. anon says:

Did YOU actually read the article? There were 2 girls in the room.

    2. Dude says:

Can you read? She was in there with her 14 year old sister and 14 year old family friend and the parents were in the adjoining room.
