Positively Philadelphia: Half-Marathon With 'Odd' Twist Coming Back In May

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Broad Street Run isn't the only race here in Philadelphia in May. There's also the Oddyssey Half Marathon on May 22nd.

"We spell it with two 'D's' because we want to emphasize that we remember running is fun. It's something that you should enjoy. We have costume contests," said Carl Ewald, Oddyssey race director.

Ewald says that doesn't mean the race isn't for serious runners too.

"One of the real advantages of our race is that it's organized by runners, so we're really in tune with the runners' experience, and we're from Philadelphia, so we really know the city and care about the city," Ewald said.

But he says if you're gonna run 13.1 miles, you should have fun doing it.

"My favorites from last year, we had a boyfriend and girlfriend who ran as a baker and a gingerbread man. We had three girls who were training together who ran as the Three Little Pigs," Ewald said. "We had a guy who actually juggled the entire way."

What?

"I can't juggle standing still, and he did it for thirteen miles," Ewald said.

Ewald says the race is all in Fairmount Park. "We start in front of Memorial Hall, we run through the Horticultural Center, in the Japanese gardens, which should be all in bloom in May. Then we drop down onto the river before we come back to Memorial Hall.

Then it all winds up with a big bang.

"We have a big party at the end with live music and free massages," Ewald said.
