Man In Wheelchair Struck And Killed By Train In Center City

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia police and CSX rail police are investigating an unusual early morning pedestrian fatality on the CSX tracks along the Schuylkill River behind the Park Towne Apartments. A man in a wheel chair was struck and killed by a train.

Police say the man, believed to be in his 50's was not carrying identification.

Investigators say the victim was in his wheelchair and either failed to see a freight train or attempted to try to make it across the tracks before the train approached the crossing at 23rd and Race Streets.

As the man wheeled himself across the CSX tracks just after 1:00 a.m., the freight train, which was unable to stop, struck the victim who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police and the medical examiners office are now attempting to identify the man who is believed to live nearby.
