Fundraiser For Girl Battling Rare Cancer Held In South Philly

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- The parents of a 9-month old Drexel Hill girl battling a rare form of brain cancer are thankful for the outpouring of community support. KYW's Hadas Kuznits attended a fundraiser for her at Chickie's and Pete's in South Philadelphia.

It was just four months ago when doctors told Claudia Donahue that her 5 month old daughter Julia has gliofibroma, but she remembers it like it was yesterday.

"Honestly, it was the worst day of my life. My whole world just crashed," Donahue said.

That's when her cousin, Alaina Marchio, decided they would hold a fundraiser for Julia.

"You think when you have a baby, they're born with 10 fingers and 10 toes, they're gonna be happy, and her parents bring her to the hospital thinking she has a stomach virus and 4 days later it turns out that she's fighting this rare form of brain cancer, then had to be sent to 5 hospitals for them to concur that it was this form of brain cancer," Alaina said.

Claudia says Julia is a fighter and so is her family.

"Never give up. Always have hope, and I truly believe that we're gonna get Julia through this."
