3 On Your Side: Grocery Deals At Drug Chains

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Are you looking to get the most for your money when you shop for groceries? Well, you may want to do more than just compare supermarket circulars. Chances are that you could get deep discounts on some of your favorite food items at your local drug store too. 3-On Your Side's Jim Donovan shows us how to take advantage of drug store deals.

Got a cold? They've got a remedy. Got a hot date? They sell stuff to get you ready! Nothing in the fridge? They've stocked up so you can whip up a meal. The grocery selection at big chain drugstores is getting bigger all the time!

CVS Manager Jim Esmond says, "You can't miss our food sections here." Over the past year CVS has doubled the number of non-perishable items in 3000 stores and redesigned over 200 urban stores to accommodate busy customers. Esmond says, "We have a grab-and-go section of prepared food that you can get on the run. We've added a lot of frozen food space and you can pretty much pick up anything you need for dinner."

Walgreens is adding more and more food products to their stores too. Walgreens Manager Kelli Conick says, "We're really trying to focus more on what the consumer wants. You don't really need to go to the supermarket anymore to you know get your food. You can come right here."

Customers are taking notice of the selection and the sales. For example at Walgreens they were offering two cans of Campbell's soup for a dollar. At Rite Aid, two boxes of cereal were on sale for five dollars. However if you use a Rite Aid rewards card you'll get an extra dollar back towards future purchases. Rite Aid Manager Rob Nestor says, "We have great prices on cereal and canned food and through the seasons we have cake mixes and all different types of things which obviously everyone needs every week."

The day 3-On Your Side visited CVS they had a promotion where you could get three 12-packs of Coke for $10. Swipe your Extra Care card and get $3 dollars back for your next shopping trip. Which brings the cost down to $7 dollars. And while we are all familiar with 10 for 10 promotions at supermarkets, CVS offers them as well. In fact they have shelves filled with items that are available for a buck, everyday of the week. If shoppers pick up the CVS circular they'll notice that CVS also rotates other items from the store into the 10 for 10 promotion as well.

Generally speaking, if a product isn't on sale, you may find prices are better at supermarkets, and big box stores. But shopping experts that 3-On Your Side has spoken with stress that when you're able to stack your savings - you can save big at the major drugstore chains. That means taking the circular, buy only what's on sale, using a coupon for it too, and then a rewards card on top of that.
