Snow Storm To Impact Morning Commute

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Area road crews have gotten a bit of a breather over the past couple weeks, with little in the way of winter weather to deal with. However that will change overnight, but the transportation agencies say they're ready to take on the snow.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Philadelphia and its surrounding counties are expected to get between 2 to 4 inches of snow.

With the bulk of the snow expected to fall early Tuesday morning, PennDOT has crews out salting roads to make it harder for the white stuff to stick.

With less than a month left to the official start of spring, PennDOT still has a third of its winter budget left -- and spokesman Gene Blaum says they'll need to put some of the $10 million remaining to work -- so you can get to work and school.

"Our crews will be moving and salting and plowing. Our aim will be to make the roads as good as possible for Tuesday morning's rush hour."

Blaum says PennDOT has 362 trucks and fresh crews ready to tackle the snow. He says the operation will start as a salting operation and then, as the snowfall increases, the plowing will begin. He says the goal is to keep roads just wet, and in good shape for the morning rush.

Road crews in the Garden State, who were kept busy up north with a plowable snow Monday morning, may have to focus attention on the extreme south, which could be harder hit.
