Rutgers University Moves Forward With Plans To Build New Dorm in Camden

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Rutgers University plans to build a new dormitory for graduate students in Camden.

According to the plan approved this week by the University's Board of Governors, the $55 million project will be based along Cooper Street between 3rd and 4th, across from the federal courthouse.

Rutgers spokesman Mike Sepanic says there'll be room for upwards of 350 graduate students. "The building's going to be 12 stories tall. It's going to have 102 rooms and, maybe best of all, it's going to have retail space on the main level."

Rutgers will pay for the work but the actual construction will be handled through the Camden County Improvement Authority under an agreement that still requires the authority's approval.

Negotiations are now underway to purchase the site; much of which is undeveloped. Hopes are to have the building ready in time for the fall semester next year.
