New Study Says Stroke Rehab Doesn't Have To Break The Bank

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Each year nearly 800,000 Americans suffer a stroke.

Up to two-thirds of survivors have problems walking. Doing physical therapy at home can improve walking just as well as a high tech treadmill program, this according to a new study at Duke University.

Perhaps more surprising is the patients who started rehab late - six months after their strokes were still able to improve. Obviously it's best to begin treatment early but the major point of this study is that if you have consistent care over a long period of time you don't necessarily need expensive care.

You need a therapist who knows what they're doing and you need treatment that is extended. Many insurance companies only pay for about 20 visits.

This study covered 36 visits and showed a dramatic change.
