Second Suspect Arrested In Beating Death Outside Traffic Court

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — CBS Philly has learned a suspect has been arrested in connection to the beating death of a pregnant woman outside Philadelphia traffic court. Sources say the suspect was picked up by police Wednesday.

Tuesday police announced they identified all of the individuals involved in the Monday afternoon beating death at 8th and Spring Garden Streets.

According to investigators, 21-year-old Tovoyia Owens went to traffic court with her boyfriend and when the couple walked out of the building, the two were confronted by two other men. Eyewitnesses told police, the two men began arguing then punching and kicking Owens to the ground. Owens was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Police say they believe the two attackers were Owens’ ex-boyfriend and his brother.

Police maintain their information is based on the one suspect arrested at the scene and are withholding the suspects’ names until charges are officially filed in this case.

According to friends, Owens was four months pregnant and was working and studying to become a lawyer. Friends say Owens was a student at Cheyney University and a mother to a 3-year-old girl.

I’m with Barbara. What DID happen with the CURRENT boyfriend? Though all the reports seem to vary, whether it was 5 or 2 guys, the reports all say that they turned on the woman and beat HER. Did the boyfriend just sit back and LET them or did he maybe hear something he didn’t like and turn on her also? Hate to sound even more negative but something just does not quite add up with him and his whole part.

I’m a bit confused. What happened to her boyfriend? Did he get beaten too? Where was he when these guys were attacking her?

Her ex was jelous and mad because she was having a baby with someone else and tried to beat that baby out of her but ended up killing her…What a shame

With all of the cameras surrounding Traffic Court and all of the cops –this
    incident never should have happened.

Cops are always in Traffic Court. There is no way that no one inside monitoring
the surveillance cameras did not see this woman being beaten.

I’ve heard of cops turning a blind eye–but this is ridiculous!!!

I hope that when they have apprehended all of those PUNKS–that once
their fellow prisoners find out what they did–they get a real taste of
STREET JUSTICE—and save the taxpayers some $ . No trial, no judge
just an eye for an eye!!!!

I totally agree. It’s such a shame that those punks took 2 precious lives that day.
