Election Returns

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Primary Day in Philadelphia is about three months away, but it became clearer on Monday that the race for mayor may not be much of a race.

In late morning, Mayor Nutter received what is considered a crucial endorsement, from the Black Clergy of Philadelphia: “This mayor is worthy of a second term in office,” said Bishop Audrey Bronson, head of the Black Clergy.

At virtually the same moment, State Senator Anthony Williams put out a statement saying that after weeks of consideration, he has decided NOT to challenge Nutter in the May Democratic primary. Williams said he did not want to go back on his word which was an earlier promise to support Nutter.

Upon hearing this, Bronson addressed a key question — Nutter’s support in the African-American community. “The accusation was made that Mayor Nutter is not black enough. Well, I think he’s black enough, white enough, red, white and blue enough!”

The Democratic Primary will be held on May 17th.

The above comments suggest that the current Mayor represents a broad section of the population but, excludes the browns and the yellows who also vote and in many instances have the money to support a candidate of their choosing.
