NEWARK, Del. (CBS) - Newark Police are searching for a suspect who reportedly tried to steal an ATM machine Friday morning.
Authorities say at about 7:30 a.m., a witness spotted the suspect at the Wachovia Bank located in the 600 block of South College Avenue. The witness thought the suspect was repairing the ATM, but then noticed the suspect attached a chain from his pickup truck to the machine, according to police.
The suspect then reportedly got in his vehicle and unsuccessfully tried to pull the ATM from its base. Police say the chain snapped and the suspect fled the scene, heading southbound on South College Avenue and then west on Christina Parkway.
The witness tried to follow the suspect to obtain the license number, but the plate was covered in fabric, according to police.
The suspect is described as a black male, 25 to 27 years old with an average build. The suspect’s vehicle is described as a blue or gray GMC or Chevy 2500 pickup truck with a ladder.
