N.J. Nurse Accused Of Stealing 85-Year-Old Man's Life Savings

MEDFORD, NJ (CBS) - A 45-year-old Burlington County woman is held on charges that she bilked an elderly man out of his life savings as she served as his caretaker.

Jeffrey Wagner, Medford Police Lieutenant, said registered nurse Mariejo Cherestal convinced an 85-year-old man to give her access to several of his bank accounts. "She subsequently then used that privilege to withdraw anywhere from $200 to $20,000 from his bank account, both in cash and actually writing checks for her mortgage and other bills," said Wagner.

The grand total was $682,000 over 17 months, ending last May. Cherestal is held on $100,000 bail, charged with theft by deception. She used at least 2 aliases: Joyce Victor and her maiden name Mariejo Constant.

She also ran a business called 'Accessible Home Health Care of Central New Jersey.' If someone feels they may have been victimized in a similar fashion they're asked to contact Medford police.
