Expert Warns of Road Salt Danger To Cars

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The severe winter weather could take a heavy toll on your car or truck if you don’t take care of it.

We’ve been riding on top of salt and brine for weeks now, and if you haven’t washed your car regularly you could be facing major damage down the line.

Chris Toriello, owner of Executive Auto Salon in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia, says all it takes is a scratch or a ding for that protective coating on your car to become an open wound, vulnerable to corrosion.

“We get cars all the time where the frame is just rusted out,” he told KYW Newsradio recently. “Sometimes there’s nothing we can do. The older vehicles, the ’96s and ’97s, they’ve been neglected and the rust is too far gone.”

Toriello says those who are waiting for better weather before getting their car washed are being penny wise and pound foolish.

He owns a business, owning a business these days isn’t easy. I also own a car wash and I consider myself an expert as well.

Lou, you can feel free to look at the information online regarding the results of leaving salt on your vehicle. Despite the fact that this guy owns a car wash, he is still correct. As for the other comments, I can understand how you might not want to put a ton of money out on washes that seem pointless, but it really does make a difference in the long run. It’s the same as washing yourself or cleaning your house….it’s just going to get dirty again- but it still needs to be cleaned or baaaad things will happen ;-)

    Kiiding, right?!?!?!? LMFAO!

  • Guess Who

Are you going to wash your car when it’s snowing every other day and there is a coating of salt on the road? I think not.

  • Jon

Salt or no salt, car owners should take pride in what they drive and wash frequently anyway. Every two weeks for me :)

  • Tamara Bennett

The ice/snow on the road can cause more damage than salt!

You gotta be kidding me. You call this journalism? The “expert” is a guy who owns a car wash? KYW should be ashamed of itself.
